Saint PORPHYRE, évêque de Gaza en Palestine (420). (Office traduit en français par le père Denis Guillaume au tome II des Ménées.) 

San Porfirio nacque da una famiglia ricca e nobile in Tessalonica attorno 347. Divenne monaco e per questo lasciò la sua patria e andò prima in Egitto, nel deserto di Scete, dove trascorse cinque anni, poi in Palestina, dove per altri cinque anni si chiuse in una grotta vicino al fiume Giordano, e infine si recò a Gerusalemme, dove, con le sue parole, illuminò tante persone. Per questo il vescovo di Gerusalemme, nel 392 lo ordinò sacerdote e gli affidò in custodia delle reliquie della Santa Croce. Nel 395 fu consacrato da Giovanni, metropolita di Cesarea, in Palestina, vescovo di Gaza. Dedicò le sue forze a confermare i credenti nella loro fede e a far conoscere il Dio vero agli infedeli. Vedendo i suoi fedeli perseguitati dagli idolatri della regione, attorno al 400 si recò a Costantinopoli, accompagnato dal Metropolita di Cesarea, e ottenne dall'Imperatore Arcadio, degli editti contro i manichei. Ritornato nella sua chiesa, poté scacciare gli eretici, bruciare il tempio di Marnas e fare costruire chiese sulle rovine dei templi, in questi stessi anni si espanse la sua fama di taumaturgo. San Porfirio morì il 26 febbraio 420.
