Eulampe et Eulampie vivaient à Nicomédie sous L'empereur Maximien et le gouverneur Maxime(vers 296). Ils s'étaient réfugiés dans les montagnes proches de la ville pour échapper aux persécutions que l'on menait alors contre les Chrétiens. Or, un jour où ses compagnons avaient envoyé Eulampe en ville pour acheter du pain, en passant dans les rues il vit les édits impériaux ordonnant la persécution des Chrétiens, que l'on venait d'afficher sur les murs. Pendant qu'il les lisait il fut saisi par les païens et amené devant les autorités. Interrogé par l'empereur, il confessa courageusement sa foi dans le Christ. A l'issue de cet interrogatoire, il sembla que le Saint se laissait convaincre et acceptait de sacrifier aux idoles. On le mena donc au temple. Alors qu'il s'avançait comme pour sacrifier, il commanda à la statue d'Harès (Mars) de tomber, et aussitôt l'idole impuissante tomba et se brisa à terre. Les païens furieux de se voir ainsi ridiculisés s'acharnèrent pour torturer le vaillant athlète du Christ. Pendant qu'on le suppliciait, sa soeur Eulampie vint le prier d'intercéder pour elle, afin d'être martyrisée avec lui. Dieu exauça sa prière: elle fut capturée et jetée dans une chaudière d'huile bouillante avec son frère. Mais Dieu avait permis qu'ils soient ainsi livrés au Martyre pour qu'éclate Sa puissance; les deux Saints ne subirent aucun dommage et à ce spectacle deux cents païens crurent eux aussi au Christ. Ils furent tous décapités un peu plus tard, en compagnie d'Eulampe et d'Eulampie, et partirent rejoindre le choeur des Bienheureux.

26 Monkmartyrs of the Zographou Monastery on Mount Athos In the year 1274 at the Council of Lyons (in France), the Byzantine emperor Michael VIII Paleologos decided to buttress his waning power by forming a union with Catholic Rome. The Athonite monks sent a letter to Michael pointing out that the primacy of the Pope, his commemoration in the churches, celebrating the Eucharist with unleavened bread, the insertion of the "filioque" ["and from the Son"] into the Creed, could not be accepted by Orthodox, and they asked the emperor to change his mind. "We clearly see," the letter said, "that you are becoming a heretic, but we implore you to forsake all this and abide in the teachings that were handed down to you.... Reject the unholy and novel teachings of a false knowledge, speculations, and additions to the Faith."
The Crusaders pushed out of Palestine and finding refuge in the Byzantine Empire, declared to the emperor their readiness to affirm the power of the Pope by fire and sword, if necessary. In addition, Michael had hired mercenaries, both Turks and Tatars, to enforce his decree.
The emperor despised the monks of Mt. Athos for their opposition. Since he did not want to provoke the Greeks, he decided to vent his spite upon the Athonite Slavs. By Michael's order, the servants of the Pope descended upon the Bulgarian Zographou monastery. When the demand to accept the Union was presented before the Zographou monks, they refused to listen. They adhered to the doctrines of the Fathers, and fearlessly censured those who accepted the Latin teachings. The majority of the Zographou monks left the monastery, but the most steadfast, twenty-six in number, remained within the monastery tower. These were:Igumen Thomas, and the monks Barsanuphius, Cyril, Michael, Simon, Hilarion, James, Job, Cyprian, Sava, Jacob, Martinian, Cosmas, Sergius, Menas, Joasaph, Joannicius, Paul, Anthony, Euthymius, Dometian, Parthenius, and four laymen.
The holy martyrs for their Orthodox Faith, were burned in the monastery tower on October 10, 1284. (also September 22).

Saint AMBROISE (Grenkov), père spirituel du monastère d'Optina où il apporta la paix de l'âme à d'innombrables pélerins (Russie 1891). Alessandro nacque dall'unione tra Mikhail Fyodorovich Grenkov, lettore delle sacre scritture presso la parrocchia del villaggio di Bolshaya Lipovitsa, e Marfa Nikolayevna Grenkova. All'età di dodici anni entrò nella scuola clericale di Tambov e, successivamente, nel seminario teologico della stessa, terminato il quale non volle tuttavia prendere i voti, impegnandosi dapprima come precettore in una famiglia di possedienti e,in seguito, come maestro di scuola del suo villaggio natale. Solo nel 1839 decise di dedicarsi alla vita ecclesiastica, entrando nel monastero di Optina sito nel governatorato di Kaluga prima come monaco addetto alla cucina e, in seguito, come Lettore di sacre scritture. Pochi anni più tardi fu consacrato ierodiacono con il nome di Ambrosius, in onore di Sant'Ambrogio, vescovo di Milano. Successivamente alla sua consacrazione si ammalò gravemente, tanto che, anche una volta guarito, rimase infermo e impossibilitato per la debolezza che lo perseguitava a celebrare la liturgia. Da allora si dedicò alla preghiera interiore e alla traduzione dei testi patristici. Quando il reverendo Macario morì nel Settembre del 1860 Ambrogio diventò monaco superiore del monastero. Morì nell'ottobre 1891 e fu seppellito nel deserto intorno a Optina. stato canonizzato nel 1988
