Saint ZAMAS, évêque de Bologne (vers 268). Con san Zama, protovescovo di Bologna, risaliamo alle radici della Chiesa petroniana fecondata dal sangue dei martiri. Come attesta l'Elenco Renano (anteriore al sec.XII), svolse la sua missione nel III secolo e probabilmente conobbe la persecuzione di Diocleziano e la pace costantiniana

Saint hiéromartyr BABYLAS d'Antioche et ses compagnons AGAPIOS et TIMOTHEE, martyrs en Sicile. Ad Antiochia di Siria, ora in Turchia, passione di san Bábila, vescovo, che, durante la persecuzione dell ' imperatore Decio, dopo aver tante volte dato gloria a Dio tra sofferenze e tormenti, ottenne di morire gloriosamente legato a ceppi di ferro, con i quali dispose che il suo corpo fosse anche sepolto. Insieme a lui si tramanda che subirono la passione anche i tre fanciulli, Urbano, Prilidano ed Epolono, che egli aveva istruito nella fede cristiana.

APOLYTIKION DI SANTA XENIA DI ROMA. TONO PL.4

IN TE, MADRE, E’ STATA PERFETTAMENTE CUSTODITA L’IMMAGINE DI DIO, PERCHE’ TU,  PRENDENDO LA CROCE, HAI SEGUITO CRISTO, E CON I FATTI HAI INSEGNATO A TRASCURARE LA CARNE, PERCHE’ PASSA, E A DARSI CURA DELL’ANIMA, REALTA’ IMMORTALE: PER QUESTO INSIEME AGLI ANGELI ESULTA IL TUO SPIRITO, O SANTA XENIA.




 Di s. Eusebia di Milasa vi sono poche notizie e la sua ‘Vita’ è piena di elementi leggendari, provenienti anche da fonti mitologiche.
Nacque a Roma, nel secolo V, cristiana convinta, volle dedicare la sua verginità a Dio, pertanto rifiutò le nozze che gli venivano proposte. Trascorse la sua vita a Milasa in Caria, antica regione sud-orientale dell’Asia Minore, abitata da popolazioni di stirpe asiatica, colonia greca, specie sulla costa dove fiorirono città come Mileto, Alicarnasso, Magnesia, Cnido.
A Milasa visse con il nome di Xenia e un miracolo operato da lei confermò la sua santità fra la popolazione. Ulteriori notizie sia pure leggendarie sono riportate nella “Bibliotheca Hagiographica Graeca”, 3 voll. edita in 3a edizione a Bruxelles 1957, in lingua greca o francese.
La sua festa si celebra il 24 gennaio. I due nomi Eusebia e Xenia sono di origine greca, Eusebia significa ‘pia, religiosa’ dal greco Eysèbios, comunque è un nome ormai poco usato al femminile, mentre Xenia nell’Oriente cristiano e nei Paesi ortodossi ha avuto più fortuna.

Saint JEAN, martyr par la main des Musulmans à Kazan (1529). The Martyr John of Kazan suffered for Christ in the city of Kazan on January 24, 1529. During the reign of Great Prince Basil the Tatars swooped down upon Nizhni Novgorod. Many of the inhabitants were taken into captivity and brought to Kazan. Also among their number was the fearless John.

When the captives were distributed to their new owners, he was given to Alei-Shnura, who was related to the Khan. By day John honestly served his master, but at night he went without sleep and prayed, patiently enduring insults and abuse. The master resolved to force his servant to become a Moslem, but John firmly declared that he worshiped Jesus Christ as God.

In the winter the Tatars tied him up and led him to a Russian cemetery, mortally wounded him with swords, and threw him into the snow. That night, St John reached the door of some Russians living in Kazan, and he asked them to summon a priest. He received the Holy Mysteries and prayed all night, then died the following morning.
